How Secure is GoToMyHMI?

GoToMyHMI is a certified secure site. All connections and transactions from any standard browser (iPhone, iPad, BlackBerry, Smartphone, Tablets, etc.,) are encrypted (256 bit encryption). All remote browser access to your HMI servers are access controlled by your policy. Your Admin will setup User Names, Passwords and other access parameters including alarm access, data entry access, etc. Your tag database does not go beyond your firewall. Only the permitted data encrypted graphically is accessed from the browser. No communication protocol request/response strings are traceable beyond your firewall.

What are the advantages of GoToMyHMI over Virtual Network Client (VNC)?

VNC stands for Virtual Network Computing. According to its creators it was conceived as an ultra-thin client system based on a simple display protocol that is platform-independent. The RFB (Remote Frame Buffer) protocol in VNC may be implemented at different levels of complexity. Regardless of the level of complexity of the underlying display protocol VNC is a client-server setup that requires installation of the server software on the HMI-Server end and the client software on the browser end. (The client software may be a Java-capable browser.)

VNC clients require an inbound connection to the VNC server for remote access. This would entail firewall configuration to permit such an inbound connection or a VPN (Virtual Private Network) setup. GoToMyHMI Cloud Nodes do NOT require any inbound connection, so firewall configuration to accept inbound connection to the HMI-Server behind the firewall is not required.

GoToMyHMI is our HMI-gateway in the cloud. In the context of ‘HMI in the Cloud’, GoToMyHMI vs. VNC, there’s NO comparison!

Independent access

Yes
Client cloud node screen access is independent of Server screen access.

No
Client is merely a remote access node sharing console I/O (mouse, keyboard and monitor) with server.

Multiple Cloud Nodes?

Yes
Any number of cloud nodes allowed and are independent of each other and the server (only limited by bandwidth).

No

Support for any platform with standard Browser

Yes
All standard Browsers available on any platform are supported( including iPhone, BlackBerry, iPad and PCs.

No
Only limited platforms where VNC client can be installed are supported.

Yes
Standard browser works just fine. No plug-in, no download, no install required.

No
Standard browser will not work. Java/ActiveX and Client VNC Software must be installed.

Firewall Security
Avoid inbound connections

Yes
Cloud Nodes do not require any inbound connection to the HMI Server.

No
VNC clients require an inbound connection behind the firewall to the VNC Server.

What does 'IP67' mean?

IP stands for 'Ingress Protection'.

An IP number is used to specify the environmental protection of enclosures around electronic equipment. These ratings are determined by specific tests.

The IP number is composed of two digits, the first digit refers to protection against solid objects and the second digit against liquids. The higher the digit, the better the protection.

Number

First Digit

Second Digit

Protection against solids

Protection against liquids

0

No protection

No protection

1

Solid objects up to 50mm³

Vertically falling drops of water (e.g. condensation)

2

Solid objects up to 12mm³

Direct sprays of water up to 15 degrees from vertical

3

Solid objects up to 2.5mm³

Direct sprays of water up to 60 degrees from vertical

4

Solid objects up to 1mm³

Water sprayed from all directions - limited ingress permitted

5

Dust, limited ingress (no harmful deposit)

Low pressure jets of water from all directions - limited ingress permitted

6

Total protection against dust

Low pressure jets of water, limited ingress permitted (e.g. ship deck)

7

No effect from immersion between 15cm and 1m

8

No effect from long periods of immersion under pressure

Do I need to download any client software or plug-ins to access my HMI?

No downloads, no tedious installs, no plug-ins. Use any standard browser on any device to access your HMI. Login and you have the HMI in your hands wherever you are: factory cafeteria, or parking lot, or on the beach, or even the golf course!
